EMDR

EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that helps people deal with traumatic memories and related emotions. It works by combining cognitive therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and fantasy exposure. EMDR was developed in the early 1990s by Dr. Francine Shapiro, who discovered that it helped people resolve emotional problems associated with unresolved trauma.

How does EMDR work?

Cognitive therapy involves helping patients understand their thoughts and feelings about the traumatic event. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing helps them get used to feeling uncomfortable while seeing specific images or sounds associated with the memory. Fantasy exposure helps them explore their worst fears about the experience without actually experiencing it firsthand. Together, these techniques help patients learn more manageable ways to cope with difficult emotions surrounding their traumas.
